City of Dodge City receives Certified Sites designation

November 17, 2022 By Angie Gonzalez

November 14, 2022 – The Dodge City Business Park received its Certified Sites designation from BNSF Railway on November 14th, 2022. This site has received a Certified Sites designation from Sunflower Electric Power Corporation and the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The 244 acre site has underwent a comprehensive analysis verifying the site meets criteria for industrial development. BNSF certification ensures a site is ready for rapid acquisition and development through a comprehensive evaluation of existing and projected infrastructure, environmental and geotechnical standards, utility evaluation and site availability.

Certified Sites are a part of BNSF’s Premier Parks, Sites and Transload program. The program is a strategic approach that addresses the increasing demand for customer site locations by developing various types of facilities across BNSF’s network. BNSF Certified Sites are reviewed by an industry expert to ensure accurate, reliable data. The goal of the program is to provide an inventory of rail-served sites that are available for immediate development.

“We are thrilled to have the Dodge City Business Park certified through BSNF Railway. The increased awareness of our site through the marketing materials from BNSF Railway will be a huge benefit to our community,” said Mollea Wainscott, Assistant Director of Economic Development.

CHAD PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS TO BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY CLASS

November 7, 2022 By Angie Gonzalez

Dodge City KS – On, November 15th, 2022, the Community Housing Association of Dodge City (CHAD) will present eight scholarships to students in the Building Construction Technology class. The presentation will be held on-site at the new build at 600 Avenue N at 11;00am. Students receiving scholarships are David Garcia, Juan Castro, Alexis Banuelos, Landon Elling, Christian Canales Canales, Jesus Gamon Mata, Mario Chacon, and Cuber Marino.

“The Community Housing Association of Dodge City supports students every year by awarding up to $6,500 in scholarships” Assistant Director of Economic Development, Mollea Wainscott said. “The CHAD Board appreciates all the hard work the students contribute to the new build every year” said Wainscott. The Dodge City Community College Building Construction Technology Program and CHAD partner to build new moderate-income housing units every year. This year, they are building a single-family house at 600 Avenue N. The house will contain 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a one car garage. The students began construction in October and will finish in May 2023. The students build the house from the ground up, learning all aspects of construction. CHAD partners with local businesses where licensed contractors are needed for the HVAC, electrical and plumbing. “We are lucky to have such great contractors in Dodge City who are willing to teach the students their trade while providing their service” said Wainscott. “It’s beneficial to the students to learn the licensed trades along with the general construction.”

This partnership allows the Community Housing Association of Dodge City to accomplish three things; build additional housing units, train our future workforce and clean up blighted neighborhoods. This is the seventh year that CHAD and the college have partnered together to build new housing, previous new builds include a single family homes at 811 1st, 1601 Mulberry Circle, 1521 Mulberry Circle, 1011 E. Elm Street and duplexes at 806 Westlawn and 510 E. Brier. More information regarding the program and pictures of the construction can be found at www.dodgedev.org/housing.

ANOTHER HOME IS REHABILITATED AND NEW MEMORIES CAN BE CREATED

May 4, 2022 By Angie Gonzalez

The Community Housing Association of Dodge City (CHAD) brings new life to this once vacant home using the Abandoned Housing Program. This home, previously located in the outskirts of Wright, Kansas, was donated by Bill Crane and was moved onto the vacant in lot on Avenue N in Dodge City, Kansas.

The Abandoned Housing Program uses a two-pronged approach to create affordable housing, rehabbing vacant homes and constructing new homes on vacant lots. CHAD accepts donations of vacant homes, rehabilitates them with the help of local contractors and places them back into the community as quality housing for ownership in the moderate-income price range. There are multiple advantages to approaching housing development by renovating vacant homes including the ability to access credit by building home equity, long-term savings over the cost of renting, pride of ownership, improved stability, and increased community involvement.

CHAD’s most recent project, a 1,430 sq ft single family home was purchased May 3, 2022, by Fulgencio Lopez-Gonzalez and Regina Chavez- Martinez. For many people, owning a home represents stability and independence. For this family it’s a lifelong dream achieved through sacrifice, hard work and the aspiration to provide a life with opportunities only previously imagined for their children.
